following on from the very robust debut of his own label failsafe, juxta position deviates back to the more melancholic aesthetic with which he initially made his mark back in 2013 on mistress recordings. drawing palpable influence from ambient electronica like boards of canada, he then reframes the aesthetic, with the help of rhythmic anchoring, on the 12 minute opening opus eureka. however, not to disappoint lovers of the slightly harder, more uptempo, electronic beat, the flip then dishes up two significantly more pressurised techno pieces, the former made in belgrade more linear, the latter reimagined more flamboyant.

deep purple’s 19th studio album sees the light of day. it is being released by the german based label earmusic. the band’s last studio effort dates back to 2005’s ‘rapture of the deep’ so this is a long time coming.
this will make album number four to feature steve morse on guitar and the third with keyboardist don airey. as previously reported, concrete information on the album title is, shall we say, up in the air. “there’s a big question mark over the name at the moment. and possibly an exclamation mark as well.” vocalist ian gillan told classic rock magazine.

after more than 2 years of waiting berlin-based artist fabian dikof is back with a new release on best works records his ep the who his trade-mark sound remains: catchy arpeggio-sounds with tech-house synth usage. with these elements he creates a very mature tapestry that gives the tune great dynamic play in its rhythmic morphosis. the track camouflage features berlin-based vocalist ann weller from the band ann & bones. last but not least remixer dubspeeka reworks the original giving it a more minimal techno-flavour and with its tool-character it hits the dance-floor full on. the who ep is yet another great stepping stone for fabian dikof. there is more to come from this gifted producer.

the next release on zone is another mighty one, this time from electro and techno duo mikron with a great remix from the exaltics. mikron is a no nonsense duo who have already put out a full length this year in the form of warning score on central processing unit. as well as that cohesive opus, they have credits on this label dating back to 2012 and have the sort of high impact, toughened style that always makes a mark.

one of the uks most exciting and versatile young talents, route 94, is the next to make his mark on crosstown rebels with mind, body & soul featuring a body rhythm soul version from nyc’s joaquin joe claussell. cohort and leftroom boss matt tolfrey is also onboard, collaborating on second track habitual. the title track sets the tone of the release by heading straight into the late night hours with varied drum workouts and inspiriting keys that compliment the meaningful vocal. while habitual, produced alongside fellow londoner matt tolfrey who has been a mainstay dj, producer and label owner in the underground house and techno scene for over a decade, is electric and sensual with an enticing bassline. damian lazarus has enlisted influential nyc head and ibadan label co-founder, joaquin joe claussell to deliver a stunning body rhythm soul version, remixed in reference to his infamous body & soul sunday parties. here he delivers delectable keys and soothing brass tones as the serve of the day. route 94 aka rowan jones shot to fame, hitting no.1 in the uk charts with my love featuring jess glynne. keeping things largely underground, he followed with releases and remixes on leftroom, defected and hot creations. overwhelming success ensued as he performed at the likes of fabric, sub club, space, ushuaia, dc10 and many more. with an abundance of new material about to drop and a packed calendar of gigs already booked in for the coming year, this is only the start for the talented artist.

the new york-based (u)nity is made up of michael valeanu, axel tosca laugart, chris smith, max cudworth and amaury acosta. they formed the band in 2006 as a project to explore afro-cuban jazz, funk, soul and contemporary electronica. they say they ve been influenced by everyone from chucho valdes to art blakey to led zeppelin to kendrick lamar, and you can definitely hear all of that in this jawdropping work. guarapachanga is special in that it was the first song written by the band back in their days as music students at the new school. it s derived from the style known as guarapachangeo the most advanced form of cuban rumba, heavily improvisational and based on very complex rhythms and melodies. on this recording, (u)nity is graced with a guest performance by grammy award winner pedrito martinez, a master rumbero, one of the greatest conga players ever, an innovator who has left a permanent mark on cuban music. martinez is also a priest in the yoruba religion and a historian of cuban culture. over its eight and a half minutes, guarapachanga twists and turns and journeys through a mind bending array of different tempos and modes, from latin jazz to hip hop, ultimately ending with a trippy ambient soundscape. the whole thing is overlaid with free spirited melody, soul and the afro-cuban essence that is the bands lifeblood. the white-hot live playing gives it the feel of the best early-morning jam session, yet it packs a sonic punch that will make it sound incredible on a good sound system in the hands of adventurous djs in the world-beat or spiritual-house vein. if you didnt know guarapachanga was a contemporary work you might mistake it for a loft classic, yet it s also as fresh and exciting as anything you ll hear this year.

ashley woz westlake is back with a nod to the sounds that have inspired him. moving away from the moodier melodies of his more recent writing, new tracks celsius and grain mark an exploration into some new techniques and sounds. feeling inspired after listening to some old bits from the great terrance parker and kerri chandler, woz loaded a 909 into his rytm and a vox, bongos and chords into a sampler with the intention of working on his workflow and having some fun. the end product was celsius which was quickly snapped up by lobster boy and left woz needing a second track for the release. he wanted to roll with the similar theme of giving his take on an older sound, so using the same workflow on the drum machine and sampler he wrote a track heavily inspired by his love for electro.

haunter records’ 2017 kicks off with two new displays of aural expansion by longtime members of the milan-based crew. twin singles from weightausend and petit singe that also mark the label’s first ventures into 7” format. through heavy use of darkened breakbeats and angular dynamics, each of the two producers sets out to have their unique sonic approach ring on throughout the sprawl.
hazina francia aka petit singe returns to give a sign of what’s to come in the very near future. her transdimentional approach is always prone to punctuate the spiritually intense quality of her taste for melody with heavy barrages of drums organized into hard-hitting grooves. each of the two tracks manages to balance in her world of feral beauty, pummeling the dancefloor while also dragging into psychedelic stupor.

high plains is the duo of scott morgan and mark bridges. morgan, based in the canadian pacific northwest, is predominantly known for his drifting, textured soundscapes released under the pseudonym loscil.

following last years compilation of archival recordings by suso saiz titled odisea, music from memory are thrilled to mark their 20th release to date with an album of new works by the spanish electronic music pioneer. recorded in madrid between january and february 2016, this is suso saizs first release of new music in nearly 10 years

early pioneers of the german new wave music scene, din a testbild were formed in 1978 by mark eins and gudrun gut (former member of einstürzende neubauten, mania d. and malaria!). din a testbild played a significant role in defining the avant-garde music of berlin. legendary is their partecipation at the festival genialer dilletanten- in 1981. programm 3 is their third album. mixed and auto-produced by mark eins with help of ziggy schöning, it was released on klaus schulzes record label innovative communication in 1983.

after last year’s massive “brainbox” album, de:tuned presents the 7th and final installment “unboxed brain” which contains 3 excellent re-interpretations by future/past (aka kirk degiorgio), mark broom and the black dog of selected tracks off the album and an exclusive new track by the future sound of london. yet again, mastered by matt colton (alchemy mastering) and related artwork by designer kevin foakes from openmind (aka strictly kev, dj food from ninja tune). both kirk degiorgio and mark broom rework b12’s “worlds end”. kirk degiorgio, who makes a rare appearance as future/past, increases the energy levels and turns the original into a dance floor bomb. broom’s version heals back to a more electro and breakbeat vibe by adding some deep ballsy and stretched out beats. on the flipside, scanner’s “eros” gets the black dog treatment. the illustrious uk outfit strips down the original into an eerie futuristic soundscape. lastly, the future sound of london brings us an intense piece of sound design: sit back and let the music take control, stay tuned!

a year after his first release on the label, german deepsmith sven weisemann is back on delsin with a sophomore effort entitled separate paths. down for his moody outings on labels like mojuba and telrae, this new four track affair continues to mark out the man behind it as a master of atmosphere. grooves floating in mid air and subtle melodies drift by like half remembered thoughts. head music that also makes your body move. it may only be four tracks long, but this ep truly takes you on a journey somewhere far away from this world.
